A Message From Courtney Smith

I am competing for people's choice during Spiva in Bloom! Support me with a monetary donation. The floral artist that raises the most money will receive 50% of the total amount and 50% will go to George A. Spiva Center for the Arts to help with things like scholarships, outreach, classes, camps and more. Thank you for your consideration! My statement for this piece: The Holiday Farm Fire was one of the largest wildfires in Oregon’s history and burned nearly 175,000 acres of the state in 2020. I immediately felt a connection to those impacted by this tragedy, as the entire Joplin community has experienced the fear that the home we’ve always known would never return. What was once smoldering ash or a pile of debris eventually becomes something unrecognizable, given all that has happened. Something stronger than before. In a sea of negative outcomes because of these tragedies, we always have the strength of our communities and resiliency of our planet. When all is lost, we have each other. Our communities call us home. The night sky is still full of stars, and our planet is already at work to heal, regrow, and give us sights and experiences to heal ourselves. I wanted to capture this growth in floral by using a mixture of burnt and dried elements, transitioning to foliage, bulbs, and other budding varieties, and then ending with a colorful display of blooms to compliment the image.
