A Message From Kelsey West

I am honored to be participating in the People’s Choice competition during Spiva in Bloom. You can support my floral design with a monetary donation. The artist who raises the most will receive 50% of the total funds raised, while the remaining 50% directly benefits the George A. Spiva Center for the Arts, supporting scholarships, educational outreach, classes, camps, and community programming. Thank you for your thoughtful support! My artist statement: I absolutely loved recreating this photograph into florals. I used deep red roses, carnations and cushion poms to bring in an older red train color. I painted flower stems silver to represent the metal railing and black hypericum berries for the black accents of the train. I added little silver dried nigella for the train horns, and of course I had to add lights. For the background, I really wanted to bring in the feel of the train coming out of the tunnel in a forest so I placed painted black greenery in the shape of a tunnel to give it some depth, then I used fresh greenery and curly willow to create the wooded area. Holding all of this together on bottom are old railroad ties with an added railroad spike, some gravel and moss as if the train were on an old railroad.
